Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Thursday 05.12.2019

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
The snowpack is still wet and unstable at lower elevations. Avoid potential release areas and runout areas for avalanches. In the alpine use caution on recently loaded slopes.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Wednesday 4. December 2019

Mildværet som begynte tirsdag har tæret godt på snødekket. Det er mye vann i snødekket og stor vannføring i bekker.
Temperaturen har vært høy (7-8 gr) og snødekket ventes å være fuktet til topps.

Mountain weather

Wednesday 4. December 2019

15 mm precipitation, up to 30 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from southwest. 1 °C to 6 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Thursday 5. December 2019

10 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from southwest, changing to fresh breeze from the southwest during renoon. -3 °C to 3 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
